Perimenopause is the phase that marks the end of a woman‘s reproductive life and precedes menopause, is the approach of the last menstruation, around the age of 50, which is caused by decreased estrogen production.
The symptoms of perimenopause lead many women to think that they are menopausal early, being the main ones: irregular menstruation, heat, night sweats, decreased libido, urinary problems, irritability, high blood pressure, headaches and dizziness.
Diagnosis is made by observing the symptoms and mainly by the irregular menstrual cycle.
Symptoms should be alleviated with a diet rich in protein and regular physical activity. Contraceptive methods should be maintained during the perimenopause phase, as, although rare, it is possible to become pregnant during this period.
Many women, when they confuse perimenopause with menopause, initiate hormone replacements, which can affect a woman’s health, as perimenopause can last for many years.
