Espinheira-santa, also known as Maytenus ilicifolia, is a plant that normally grows in countries and regions with a temperate climate, such as southern Brazil.

Preparation: Add the sacred hawthorn leaves to the boiling water, cover and let it steep for about 10 minutes. Filter and heat. It is advisable to drink this tea 3 times a day, on an empty stomach, or half an hour before meals.

Espinheira-santa capsules are available in pharmacies, at a dose of 380 mg of dry extract of Maytenus ilicifolia. The usual dose is 2 capsules, 3 times a day, before the main meals.
For skin problems such as eczema, scars, or acne, hot compresses with Espinheira-santa tea can be applied directly to the lesion.
Espinheira-santa should not be used in people with a history of allergy to this herb. Nor should it be used during pregnancy, due to its abortifacient effect, and in lactating women, as it can cause a reduction in the amount of breast milk. It is also contraindicated in children under 12 years of age.
