For the analgesic effect in adults, codeine should be used at the 30 mg dose or at the dose indicated by the doctor, every 4 to 6 hours, without exceeding the maximum dose of 360 mg per day.
For children, the recommended dose is 0.5 to 1 mg /kg body weight every 4 to 6 hours.
A lower dose is used for cough relief, which may be between 10 and 20 mg, every 4 to 6 hours, for adults and children over 6 years of age.
Some side effects of codeine use include drowsiness, constipation, abdominal pain, sweating and confusion of the senses.
The use of codeine is contraindicated in people allergic to any of the components of the formula, during pregnancy, in children under 3 years of age, people with acute respiratory depression, diarrhoea from poisoning and associated with pseudomembranous colitis or in cases of sputum cough.
