Spinraza is a drug indicated for the treatment of a genetic disease called spinal muscular atrophy, because it contains some of the genetic material capable of causing the production by the SMN-2 gene of a protein normally produced by the SMN-1 gene, a substance missing in cases of spinal muscular atrophy. This reduces neuron loss and improves muscle strength.
This medicine can be used as an active ingredient in humans and can be given by injection and should be discontinued every 4 months to prevent the development of the disease and relieve symptoms. Spinraza is a medicine to be given in the hospital.
