Monuril: what it’s for and how to take it correctly

Monuril contains phosphomycin, which is an antibiotic indicated for the treatment of bacterial urinary tract infections, such as acute or recurrent cystitis, uretrovesic syndrome, urethritis, bacteriuria during asymptomatic pregnancy and to treat or prevent urinary tract infections that occur after surgery or medical interventions.

This medicine can be purchased in a pharmacy, in a pack of one or two units, for a price of about 44 or 94 reais respectively, upon prescription presentation.

  • The contents of Monuril’s envelope should be dissolved in a glass of water and the solution should be taken with an empty head.
  • Immediately after preparation and preferably at night.
  • Before bedtime and after urination.
  • After starting treatment.
  • Symptoms should go away within 2 to 3 days.

The usual dose consists of a single dose of 1 envelope, which may vary depending on the severity of the disease and according to medical criteria. For infections caused by Pseudomonas, Proteus and Enterobacter, it is recommended to administer 2 envelopes, administered at 24-hour intervals.

For the prophylaxis of urinary tract infections, surgery and instrumental maneuvers, it is recommended to administer the first dose 3 hours before the procedure and the second dose 24 hours later.

Some of the most common side effects that can occur during treatment with Monuril are diarrhea, nausea, upset stomach, vulvovaginitis, headaches and dizziness.

Although rarer, abdominal pain, vomiting, red spots on the skin, hives, itching, fatigue and tingling may also occur.

Monuril should not be used in people with hypersensitivity to phosphomycin or any of the components of the formula.

In addition, it should not be used in people with severe renal impairment or haemodialysis, children and pregnant or lactating women.
