Calcareous tendinitis occurs when small calcium crystals are deposited in a tendon, this calcification may go away on its own, without treatment, but when this does not happen, physical ultrasound can remove calcium deposits without surgery in most cases.
It is not yet known exactly why this calcification is forming, but the most accepted theory is that it is formed due to the decrease in blood reaching the inflamed tendon, with a deposit of calcium salts there, changes in thyroid metabolism and estrogens can also promote its formation.
- It usually forms after age 40 and is more common in women.
- And although it can only appear on one side of the body.
- It can also affect both at once.
- One of the most affected tendons is the super spiny tendon.
- As shown in the image above.
- But the rotator cuff of the shoulder is also greatly affected.
The only way to identify calcification in a tendon is through imaging tests. The x-ray should not show the tendon, however, in case of calcification, a small whitish area can be seen where it formed.
During tendon palpation, the person should feel some pain, but it cannot be said that there is a calcification solely for pain and that, therefore, an image scan may be useful, although it is generally not requested simply because of this suspicion.
Limestone tendinitis often heals on its own because there is spontaneous remission of bone deposit, however, it is not known when this occurs and therefore every time the person develops symptoms, he or she should undergo treatment with some physiotherapy sessions, often with electrotherapy, to reduce inflammation and pain of surrounding tissues.Ultrasound is also able to reduce calcification, with excellent results.
Painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs in pills or ointments can also help with pain, but in more difficult cases, when no treatment relieves symptoms, arthroscopic surgery may be indicated. This surgery involves scraping the calcified site, completely eliminating calcification.Infiltrations with anesthetics and corticosteroids are also indicated for immediate pain relief, but can only be performed once or twice a year.
Here are some quick tips for combating pain in the video below
In physiotherapy, TENS and ultrasound are indicated for pain management although it is not yet known exactly how ultrasound works on the reabsorption of deposited calcium, increases site temperature and blood flow, facilitating the elimination of calcium deposits.
Exercises such as stretching and strengthening with elastic bands such as Theraband are indicated, as well as joint manipulation techniques. Pendulum exercises are excellent strategies to reduce pain and maintain capsule integrity by avoiding the protective position of the shoulder, which generates more pain.and limits movement.
The rest of the affected limb is indicated in case of pain and movement limitation and, therefore, as far as possible avoid holding heavy objects with the affected arm, however absolute rest is not necessary and, therefore, the use of scarf is not recommended as it is important to maintain some movement to maintain the production of synovial fluid that irrigates the joint.
